Academics

Take the virtual tour!

Our Academy:
The Overton Engineering Academy was created in 2010 for the purpose of making the high school curriculum relevant by applying it to the field of engineering. Students who are interested in inventing, problem-solving, design, architecture, drafting, building, or environmental issues should apply and register for this academy. Our teachers have common planning time to meet with our students and plan great instruction. Our students have lunch together (as scheduling allows) and go on field trips together. Students have the opportunity to join our academy clubs, job shadow, and get paid internships. Students in our academy must complete a senior project related to their learning over the three years spent in our academy.

What is the Overton Agriculture Program?
Overton Agriculture prepares students for post-secondary pursuits including college and university studies, technical schools, and skilled trades. Through our agriculture classes, students can earn 3 hours of transferable college credits, improve employability skills, find support in starting their own business, participate in career development events, and develop leadership skills. We are part of the Engineering Academy and the Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Career Cluster that prepares learners for careers in over 20% of the current US workforce. Overton Agriculture offers the Horticulture Science Program of Study. The Agriculture Programs of Study can be found here

What is the Horticulture Science Program of Study?
Horticulture Science prepares students for future careers in the management of greenhouse operations, horticulture production, landscape design and maintenance, and turf management. Content covered in this POS includes principles of plant health, growth, reproduction, and biotechnology, principles of hydroponics and aquaponics, greenhouse structures, growing media, site analysis and planning, principles of design, and plant selection and care techniques. Upon completion of this POS, students will be prepared to pursue careers or further study in the horticultural sciences.

Classes We Currently Offer:

Greenhouse Management
*Dual-Credit Class, transferable across the state*

Includes hands-on experience in the greenhouse.

This course is designed to prepare a student to manage a greenhouse operation. Students in this class will learn to produce various ornamental crops and food crops. An understanding of structures, crop selection, and growing systems will be explored. As populations continue to expand, the importance of food production in a climate controlled environment increases. Today’s agriculture students are preparing to meet the needs of a growing world. Greenhouse students will be taking a statewide dual credit challenge examination, which can earn 3 hours of college credit at Tennessee Public Universities. For more information, please visit

Principles of Plant Science and Hydroculture

Includes hands-on experience in aquaculture and hydroponics.

Principles of Plant Science and Hydroculture focuses on essential knowledge and skills related to the science of plant growth. This course covers principles of plant health, growth, reproduction, and biotechnology, as well as fundamental principles of hydroponics and aquaponics (growing plants without soil, the process of growing fish, and the combination of growing plants and fish in a water-based system).
